About

As you might have guessed, and rightly so, this is a blog about me, a graphic art designer, Robert Tutsky. This blog will be about my experiences within the graphic design world. It’s a big world out there with a lot going on in the graphic design industry and I hope to bring to light interesting facts about it and some humble graphic design ideas of my own.

I have been a graphic designer for over 25 years and for the most part enjoyed every minute of it. I can remember design before computers were in vogue (or even existed for the design industry for that matter). We worked with rub on type for header copy (Letraset, Press-type and others) and stat cameras were used to adjust sizes of graphics, then adjusted and pasted on mechanical boards with wax or rubber cement as a binder. For body copy you ordered galleys of type from type houses that specialized in setting copy to your specifications, crossed your fingers and hoped the typesetter gave you what you were graphically looking for.

There was more to it than that… working with photographers one-on-one to get the image you were looking for (no Photoshop back then) and if there were minor or even major changes, the airbrush came in handy indeed. If whatever you were looking for couldn’t be done, either from time constraints or lack of ability, you found yourself designing around it. You always gave quality and if the client had time and was willing to pay, you added a healthy dose of quantity.

All of the graphics you produced were photographed and the negatives were used to burn plates for the final printing process. Looking back and realizing what we went through to complete a project really was a pain compared to what you can accomplish these days with a computer.

I’m still impressed that you can press a key and your final digital design is whisked off to a printer, sometimes to a printer on the other side of the globe, ultimately having the printed package delivered to the client within a few days.

I am looking forward to adding useful information for all of you out there interested in the graphic design world. Please send me any feedback that you have… questions you need answered, features you’d like to see, or maybe you would like to contribute your own take on graphic design, whatever, I am open to all of it, just let me know… leave a comment below.
